The Mitsu Uroko (Three Fish Scales) is the historic mon (family crest) of the powerful Hōjō clan, one of the most influential families in medieval Japanese history. The Hōjō controlled the hereditary title of Shikken (Regent) of the Kamakura Shogunate from 1203 to 1333, exercising significant political and military authority during Japan’s feudal era. Despite holding the title of regent, the Hōjō clan wielded power that often surpassed that of other noble families with similar positions. They played a crucial role in shaping the Kamakura government, promoting the practice of Zen Buddhism, and strengthening Japan’s military leadership. The Hōjō are especially remembered for successfully organizing Japan’s defense against the Mongol invasions of the 13th century, preserving the nation's independence during one of its greatest challenges. However, over time, dissatisfaction and resentment toward Hōjō rule began to grow, ultimately contributing to the clan’s decline.
